For instance,\u00a0water might penetrate through your roof at one location, run down for several feet or\u00a0longer, and \u201cleak\u201d through a second location. Where you spot the damage \u2013 where the\u00a0insulation is wet, shingles are rotting, etc. \u2013 is the distall (far) problem. You want to find\u00a0the proximal problem (the root cause).<\/p>\n<h3>Grab a flashlight and a helper, and let\u2019s get going.<\/h3>\n<p>You might want to do this leak hunting during a rainy day, since that\u2019s when the leaks\u00a0will be most active. If not, you can actually jerry-rig \u201cfake rain\u201d by spraying a hose\u00a0on your roof. Head up into your attic (or the room right below the roof) and scour the\u00a0sealing and other areas for water, damp spots, spots that \u201cdon\u2019t look right,\u201d or spots\u00a0where the paint is blistering. Places where moisture can accumulate include gutters,\u00a0shingles, gaskets, flashing, rubber seals around vents and pipes, and ridge caps.<\/p>\n<p>Once you identify all the leaks (or possible leaks), wait until the rain stops (or turn off the\u00a0water). Once things have dried off, go up on the roof while a helper stays in the room\u00a0below. Turn on the water and use trial and error (communicating with your helper via a\u00a0cell phone or a walky-talky) to identify the proximal location based on when the distill\u00a0areas activate, when you spray water on the roof. Don\u2019t flood potentially problematic\u00a0areas, or you will have a harder time locating the proximal problem area.<\/p>\n<p>If this all sounds too complicated, convoluted, or time consuming, you might be right.
